Foremost composer of Italian Romantic opera. Milan saw the premieres of his operas Oberta 1839, Nabucco 1842, Rigoletto 1851, Trovatore & La Traviata 1853, among others. As a sign of his immense popularity with the public, Verdi's name came to represent an acronym for the rallying cry of Italy's unification: Vittorio Emanuele, Re d'Italia.
