Replaced an opera house, which had burned down and designed by Giuseppe Piermarini (1776-78). Since the operas themselves had become more opulent in music and settings, the new opera house was immense in size and technical complexity. Virtually destroyed in World War II, La Scala was rebuilt, in 1946, to seat over 3,600.
