Gonzaga Family

From 1328, ruled Mantua, Italy, as rivals to Viscontis and other powerful families. Power waned in 1627 with the extinction of a direct line. This led to the War of the Mantuan Succession, 1628-31, with France and Spain backing rival claimants. The French branch of Gonzaga-Nevers won and ruled both duchies, until it died out in 1707.
